Bennett Blackburn Woodcarvings: Opening Reception with the Artist SATURDAY MARCH 3rd - 3-6 pm

Location: Southold

3/3/2012 3:00:00 PM - 3/3/2012 6:00:00 PM

Join us for a spectacular show of woodcarvings by Bennett Blackburn. These sculptures spark the imagination and invite the contemplation of three-dimensional form. Moving around the work gives the viewer constantly changing perceptions of the spatial composition. The articulation of open space is every bit as important as the shaping of solid mass. Some of his pieces are ethereal and light, some geometric and grounded, while others seem animalistic and alive. While remaining firmly rooted in the accomplishments of twentieth century abstraction, he also finds inspiration in nature, philosophy and current events. Mr. Blackburn received an Honors degree in Sculpture and Design from Wesleyan University. His work has been shown locally, as well as in New York City and throughout New England. He is a practicing architectural woodworker and has worked extensively on the restoration and renovation of historic East End houses. Opening reception will be held at the Group for the East End’s Southold office at 54895 Route 25 – across from Bridgehampton National Bank and next to Ace Hardware. Stop by to see this one-of-a-kind show, talk to the artist and enjoy a glass of wine.

Honoring Rachel Carson: Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Silent Spring

Location: Bridgehampton

4/28/2012 4:00:00 PM - 4/28/2012 7:00:00 PM

Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring was a cornerstone of the modern environmental movement. Join local environmental enthusiasts and organizations from throughout eastern Long Island as we come together to honor this accomplished biologist and writer. We will also celebrate the environmental accomplishments that have occurred in our unique region over the past 50 years since Silent Spring was published (e.g., the return of our osprey population). The event will feature a special presentation by Linda Lear, renowned lecturer and author of the biography Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served as we reflect on the past and set our sights toward a sustainable future for the East End. Available for purchase will be Linda Lear's book Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature and select titles by Carson herself. The event will take place overlooking Vineyard Field in Bridgehampton, site of the Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt’s (FLPG) seven-year-strong grassland restoration project. Located behind the South Fork Natural History Museum (377 Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike), the field was purchased for open space preservation by the Town of Southampton in 1998 and stands as one of the few remaining preserved grasslands in the town. The venue was chosen to embody the powerful conservation ethic that flowered from Ms. Carson’s Silent Spring. Tickets are $50 each prior to April 10th and $60 each thereafter. Checks can be made out to “FLPG” and sent to “FLPG – Rachel Carson,” P.O. Box 1130, Bridgehampton, NY 11932. Please visit www.longpondgreenbelt.org for more information. This event is co-sponsored by Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt, Canio’s Cultural Cafe, Group for the East End, and the South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo).
